Our Saturday morning ritual is taking a long walk with Red and finding a place to enjoy a cup of coffee and a breakfast treat. We live in between Lincoln Square and Andersonville so we have a lot of options and mix things up, but our favorite place to go is Café Selmarie in Lincoln Square. Not only do they have one of the best bakeries around (with lots of options), but they also serve brunch, lunch and dinner.
When you walk in you are overwhelmed by the amazing smells of fresh baked breads, cinnamon pecan rolls, croissants, cakes, tarts, roulades, cookies, muffins, etc and the aroma of Intelligentsia coffee. You feel like you've just walked into a bakery in France. Our favorite go-to pastries are the chocolate croissant and cinnamon pecan roll. They are INSANELY good. You can also get day old pastries for half the price, but they run out fast. I've also had their ham and cheese croissant before, but they also sell out early in the morning.
It's a very welcoming space with big picture windows looking over Giddings Square and the fountain. Enjoy the pastries and coffee inside or take it outside and sit on the park benches. It's a great place to people watch - it's full of dogs, families, tourists and strollers!
Café Selmarie also holds a special place in my heart. Andy proposed to me at the fountain outside and we came to Café Selmarie to celebrate our engagement with desserts and champagne. They had already closed, but were nice enough to stay open for us and let us sit and enjoy the moment for as long as we wanted. I'll never forget it!
